Color Sorting

The kids can do a little of this, but Addison particularly so.  Or maybe it's just that Caden would rather be riding his tractor ; )  The other day we were playing with translucent swizzle sticks on the light table.  I noticed that when you laid them across each other you could effectively mix colors.  And then I realized, we had cups in the same colors as the sticks.  So I dug them out, put a few sample sticks in a cup as I said, "Oh look...  I can put the yellow stick in the yellow cup, and the blue stick in the blue cup..."  And Addison proceeded to color-sort the rest of the sticks correctly, and unassisted.  A few days later we were picking a hair bow out of her box and inspiration hit.  I dumped the box, put a few similarly colored bows together in groups and asked her where to put the bow she'd selected.  On cue, she began sorting bows.  Later on we tried these primary colored poms...   I love how they could correct the mis-sorts!

I'd like to see what they do with more open ended things, like the collection of bottle caps I've been building up.  You know, things they could sort by color and other attributes.  Stay tuned to see how that goes.
