We began the Outer Banks week on Ocracoke. The room overlooked the harbor and we enjoyed meals, coffee and naps on the porch in between bike rides and turns with the binoculars. We watched the watermen come in and out each day, along with the ferry. Old homes, rich history and a quick lesson in "Ocracoke-speak" made this part of the trip our favorite, hands down.
Highs: The beauty and remoteness of the island. No plan, no schedule, no chain stores, no problems!
Lows: The "Back Porch" dining experience and the ensuing ice-cream emergency. And having to leave... we could have stayed all week!
After Ocracoke we headed up the Outer Banks, visiting sites along the way. Another ferry ride took us to the Graveyard of the Atlantic museum. Then we climbed the Hatteras lighthouse (almost 300 steps!) and checked out the old lifesaving station at Chicamicomico.
The next morning we hit the Wright Brothers Memorial and Jockey's Ridge, followed by a trip over to Roanoke Island and the waterfront at Manteo before heading home the next day.
Highs: Lots of history and lots of laughs!
Lows: Coming back to the real world again.
