If I Couldn't Be An Educator...

... I'd be in the medical field.  A nurse.  A doctor maybe.  But somebody with basic medical experience for sure.  Because I get a serious case of anxiety when my kids start feeling bad.  And I think it would help tremendously if I knew how to diagnose real chest congestion vs. clear lungs that only sound congested because of referred sounds from somewhere else.  If I knew how to tell a virus from a bacterial infection.  But I don't.  So I did the usual anxiety dance before finally deciding to head off to the local pediatrician's office with the kids while in Hendersonville.

Thank goodness for Grammy... and Clifford.  Grammy took charge of the double stroller.  The reading of books.  And the holding of the person who wasn't being examined.  So that I was free to help the examinee, talk to the doctor and try to listen with both ears.  And Clifford books managed to hold the kids' attention as they waited.  And waited.  Final diagnosis?  Caden had a virus.  Addison had croup.

Addison got a steroid to help reduce inflammation in her airway (yikes!) so she could sleep.  And she did sleep better.  But that's about it.  The cough just had to work its way out.  Caden got nothing.  Until two days later, when I called back.  His fever had spiked, his cough and congestion were worse... and he got an antibiotic.  Which helped the fever, but didn't resolve the illness.   Which makes me think the doctor was right.  They both had viral infections.  Ug.  I certainly didn't want them to have something terrible, but there's a part of me that would have been relieved to know it was bacterial.  Which could at least be treated.  No dice though.  Things just had to run their course.  So, it was back to business as usual at Grammy and Grampy's.  Which included trying to keep the kids as happy and comfortable as possible, while the days passed and they slowly started to recover.
