This morning, still riding high on the success of yesterday's cooking adventure with the twindles, I decided to help them set up a grocery store. I wasn't expecting them to play pretend just yet, but I did want to see what they would do with it all. So we carried our cash register to the toddler table and I cut some colored card stock scraps I had lying around to size to fit the cash drawer. We used some old produce containers to hold our plastic fruit and a small sized shopping bag to haul the loot. Also we had a plastic shopping cart and basket. All of this was either bought on consignment, on hand or purchased with Pampers gifts-to-grow points. Not bad! And just like yesterday things were going fine until I started wishing I had more. Fruits and veggies are great but that's only part of the grocery store... So I raided the pantry for non-perishable items that would make the play more realistic. When I added jello, polenta, macaroni, rice, and an unopened box of flavored tea bags we went from needing me to keep the play going to "later Mom, I've got this, and you're blocking the aisles".
Addison stayed in the playroom, moving her food items from her shopping basket to her shopping bag and back (doesn't everyone grocery shop at White House Black Market?!?). Well, that and carrying around the "mo-LEN-ta" which she was most pleased to be able to name. Caden pretty much stayed with the cash register, trying to figure out why I put paper in the drawer and trouble shooting the broken hand-scanner. But when I brought him a smallish canvas tote he was back in the game, loading it up with food and carrying it around. I wonder if, at some point, they'll begin to role play shopping in the grocery store with a double stroller in tow.... Now THAT would be funny!
