First Steps

Dear Caden,

Today you took your first steps, all by yourself. I had taken you away from your play to change you, and when I stood you back up on the ground I felt you perfectly balanced and solid. So I took my hands away to see what you would do. You stood strong for a moment and then took two small steps forward, quickly squatting to play as if nothing at all had just happened.

You only went about 5 inches, but those two little steps seemed so big to me. For just a few seconds, you did not need my arms to hold you. Or my hands to guide you. For just a moment in time, we weren't a package deal. You were your own little person, independent of me.

Those two little tiny faltering steps are just the first of many that you will take away from me, and I am ok with that. I want you to pursue things that interest you, to take risks, and to explore and discover this amazing world! As you do, I will proudly and anxiously watch you from behind. Always waiting. Always watching. Always loving you, no matter what direction you go or how far away you are.
