Got The Itch

It's time. We haven't been camping in approximately, forever. So I think I'll set aside a few track out days to go off the grid and relearn some of the stuff my sweet husband has taught me over the years.

1. Ounces matter. Half a pound here and an extra pound there in your pack equals major exhaustion when you're carting around everything you'll need on your back. I quite seriously pleaded with Travis to let me carry less drinking water on our second trip b/c it seemed to be an easy way to lighten my pack load...

2. Up does not always equal down. You'd think it impossible, but I'm fairly sure that 90% of my steps are in the uphill direction when lugging my pack around.

3. A hiking trip is not the time to go on a diet. I know because I've tried. You will bonk (just like my husband told me I would). It will be horrible for everyone (he kindly left that part out), until you wise up and eat.

4. Time in the wilderness is awesome. No phone. No schedule. No connectivity. Just you and nature, getting reaquainted.

5. An ounce of preparation is indeed worth a pound of cure. I knew I had a winner when Travis took me and two girlfriends camping. I did not however know that I was marrying MacGyver. I found out on that trip, when we unpacked our tents and discovered that my two friends had arrived with their tent but no poles. Somehow, Travis managed to rig up our trekking poles as temporary supports despite the whipping winds.

Yep... it's time. To lace up the boots and hit the trails.
